http://www.crown.edu/4215.0.html Crown College of Nursing

The mission of the Crown College Nursing Department is to provide a strong, biblically-based nursing education for the purpose of preparing Christian men and women for service to the community, the church at large, and the world.  Building upon the history of missionary nursing at Crown College and the Christian and Missionary Alliance, this new program seeks to prepare competent nursing professionals who can practice Christian caring in a variety of cultures around the world.

Courses in the nursing program require students to spend substantial time in off-campus clinical settings such as hospitals, clinics and public health agencies.  Students must furnish their own transportation to and from these clinical sites.

The field of nursing is technologically complex.  Crown's state-of-the-art nursing lab gives students the chance to sharpen their skills with the most up to date tools prior to heading into the field.  Additionally, through online assignments and discussions, nursing students learn to collaborate and have increased access to learning resources.

BSN-Prelicensure

The BSN-Prelicensure curriculum includes a strong Christian Studies core as well as a background in science and the humanities.  The first two years of the program focus upon providing the student with a strong foundation of bible-based courses and sciences before the student enters the nursing program in the fall of the junior year.  Clinical nursing experiences are provided with the cooperation of a variety of hospitals and agencies throughout the area.  In keeping with the emphasis on missionary nursing, students will be required to participate in a cross-cultural nursing experience.  Graduates of the program will be eligible to apply to take the national licensure examination (NCLEX).

BSN-Completion

The BSN-Completion program allows students to develop their understanding of the incorporation of critical thinking, communication, assessment and technical skills in profession nursing practice.  Courses and clinical experiences will emphasize the role of the advocate and leader in biblically-based professional nursing care.

Through the Center for Crown Adult Programs (CCAP), students come to class one evening per week and take just one class at a time.  Each three credit class is completed in five weeks.  Through this model, students can concentrate their efforts on one subject at a time and can plan around a consistent schedule throughout the program.

Accreditation

Crown College is regionally accredited by The North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA) in 1975.

The College also is a member with the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU).

The College has received national and international recognition for its commitment to innovative caring-based nursing education; to the integration of teaching, research and service as an approach to education and practice; to understanding and respecting the uniqueness of those we are privileged to nurse; and to remaining visionary and on the cutting edge of nursing education. Caring is the essential concept that grounds our College. Caring guides the process of how nursing is studied as well as how we live life day-to-day. Our students and accomplished faculty examine what it means to live caring in everyday life. Understanding the substantive nature of caring not only influences daily living but it also informs and directs nursing practice.

The College of Nursing enrolls students on three campuses approximately 850 upper division undergraduate baccalaureate students; 285 masters students; and 26 doctoral students. We are proud of the student diversity. Approximately 30% of students hold baccalaureate degrees in another discipline; 34% are classified as minority (American Black, American Indian, Haitian, Asian, or Caribbean Islander); and they represent several different countries. Students maintain excellent grades despite their challenging life situations. Many students attend school full time, work, and care for families. Most of the students complete at least graduate-level study in nursing.

The Department of Nursing offers a four- year baccalaureate nursing program which is fully accredited by the California State Board of Nursing and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. Once students are admitted to the major, the program consists of six semesters. Students are eligible to take the state licensing exam after successful completion of required nursing major courses.

The baccalaureate degree in nursing has been identified by the major professional nursing groups as entry level into the practice of professional nursing. Unlike diploma and two-year nursing programs, the bachelor of science degree in nursing is built upon a base of study in the liberal arts with clinical experience concentrated in the upper level of study.

The advantages of the BS in Nursing include:

receiving more in-depth knowledge of biological and social sciences; a higher level of reading, writing and mathematical skills; preparation for leadership roles; courses stressing preventive and rehabilitative health counseling and education (nutrition, medications, discharge planning),as well as acute and long-term care, supervisory roles; the degree can be used as a stepping stone to a master's degree and a role as a teacher, clinical specialist, nursing practitioner, administrator or researcher.

Humboldt Nursing graduates are also eligible to apply for Holistic Nursing Certification and Public Health Nurse Certification.

The Nursing Department was established in 1976 to offer a RN-to-BSN program.  Since then, the department has expanded to offer both undergraduate and graduate programs.  The Nursing Department presently offers two tracks in the undergraduate program and two tracks in the graduate program. Both programs are accreditated by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing (CCNE). Goals of the Nursing Department include preparing nurses for lifelong learning, caring service, and global citizenship.

RN to BSN Track

The RN to BSN track is for individuals who are licensed registered nurses (RN) with a diploma or associate degree and wish to earn a baccalaureate degree. All required RN-to-BSN nursing courses are completed on-line. Additional courses required for graduation, such as liberal studies (Dragon Core) or upper division electives are available in a variety of formats.

BSN Track

The BSN track is for individuals who wish to become a registered nurse. This track prepares students to meet the requirements to take the national licensing examination (NCLEX). This track is offered in 8 consecutive semesters, including two summer semesters. Students complete the program in 3 calendar years. Nursing courses begin the first semester with supporting courses taken concurrently.

MS Track

The Master’s of Science with a major in nursing prepares professional registered nurses for a specialty role as a Nurse Educator or an Adult Health Clinical Nurse Specialist.  Guidelines from national and specialty organizations were used to develop a curriculum that prepares graduates for certification examinations in specialties that require certification to practice.

DNP Track

The Doctor of Nursing Practice is offered as a collaborative program through a consortium of four universities: Minnesota State University Moorhead; Minnesota State University, Mankato; Winona State University; and Metropolitan State University. This degree program is for nurses with a master’s degree in nursing who wish to gain the advanced clinical, organizational, economic, and leadership competencies necessary in an increasingly complex healthcare environment.
